One of the most common questions we get from Florence County residents: "Do I need a permit for a dumpster?" The short answer depends entirely on where you place it.
The Simple Rule
โ Private property (driveway, yard) = No permit needed
โ ๏ธ Public street or right-of-way = Permit required
When You DON'T Need a Permit
If you can place the dumpster entirely on your own property โ your driveway, parking area, or yard โ you do not need a permit in the City of Florence or unincorporated Florence County. This covers the vast majority of residential dumpster rentals.
When You DO Need a Permit
You'll need to contact city or county offices if:
- The dumpster must be placed on a public street
- It extends into the public right-of-way (sidewalk, curb area)
- You're in a commercial zone with specific placement rules
- Your neighborhood has HOA restrictions (not a government permit, but still required)
How to Get a Dumpster Permit in Florence
- Contact the City of Florence Public Works department
- Provide the placement address and dumpster size
- Pay any applicable permit fees
- Place the dumpster according to any conditions (reflective cones, time limits, etc.)
Processing usually takes 1-2 business days. Plan ahead if you need street placement.
HOA Considerations
Several Florence SC neighborhoods and subdivisions have HOA rules about dumpster placement. Common restrictions include:
- Maximum rental duration (often 7-14 days)
- Must be placed in driveway, not visible from street (not always possible)
- Prior written notification to the HOA board
- Specific size limitations
Tip: Check your HOA covenants before ordering and send a quick email to your HOA board. Most are fine with dumpsters for active renovation projects.
